We've seen these birds everywhere in the Lakes District of Chile. Slightly larger than pigeons, they have beautiful brownish, orange coloring.
They look black and white when flying. And their cry is incredibly harsh and annoying! Click on this link to hear what they sounded like last night:
We're staying at a birding lodge near Puerto Varas and the owner says they're Southern Lapwings.
